Perm vs. Keratin Treatment: Which Is Right for You?
October 9, 2026 · InStyle Salon Team
Perm or keratin? They do opposite jobs. A perm adds lasting waves or curls. A keratin treatment smooths frizz and makes hair easier to style, without trying to curl it. At InStyle Salon on Medlock Bridge Road in Johns Creek, both are on the texture menu — we pick one at consultation based on the shape you want, not a trend.
See keratin and perm services or book a texture appointment.
What a keratin treatment does
A keratin treatment infuses the hair with keratin protein, seals the cuticle, and cuts frizz. Hair is left smoother and shinier, with some natural movement still there. It is not a perm, and it is not a chemical relaxer.
At InStyle Salon:
- Appointments are booked for about 120 minutes
- Results typically last 3–5 months with sulfate-free aftercare
- You wait 48–72 hours before the first wash (your stylist confirms the window for the formula used)
It is the right service if humidity in Georgia makes your hair puff, you want less daily heat, or you like your cut and only want it to behave. For the full walkthrough, read how keratin works at InStyle and how long a keratin treatment lasts.
What a perm does
A perm (texture wave) reshapes the hair so waves or curls stay after you wash it. The curl is in the hair that was treated; it grows out as new hair comes in.
At InStyle Salon a perm is booked for about 60 minutes. Price depends on hair length, density, and the curl you want — we quote it at the salon.
Choose a perm if you want:
- Lasting waves or curls, not just a blowout that falls out
- More volume and shape on hair that hangs straight
- A look you can wear air-dried instead of curling with a wand every morning
A perm will not smooth frizz the way keratin does. If the goal is sleek and manageable, keratin is the service. If the goal is curl, the perm is the service.
Quick comparison
| Keratin treatment | Perm | |
|---|---|---|
| Result | Smoother, less frizz, easier styling | Lasting waves or curls |
| Movement | Keeps some natural movement | Adds curl pattern |
| Appointment | About 120 minutes | About 60 minutes |
| How long | Typically 3–5 months | Grows out with the treated hair |
| Best if | You fight frizz and humidity | You want shape that stays after washing |
Which one to book
- Book keratin if your sentence is “I want it smoother and less frizzy.”
- Book a perm if your sentence is “I want waves or curls that last.”
- Ask first if you have recent color, henna, or a previous texture service. We need that history before either formula goes on the hair.
We do not offer Brazilian blowouts or chemical relaxers. If you have been comparing those online, start with a keratin consultation — see keratin vs. Brazilian blowout for why we focus on keratin and perm instead.
Do not book both on the same day. Stacking a perm and a keratin treatment is hard on the hair. If you want smoother hair and a little bend, tell us at consultation; we will say whether keratin alone is enough.
After you leave
Keratin needs sulfate-free shampoo and that first-wash wait. A perm needs the stylist’s home-care instructions so the new shape sets. Either way, bring a photo of the finish you want — sleek, soft wave, or defined curl — so the appointment matches the picture.
